Teaching children to read proficiently is the gift we give children for a lifetime! If we teach the sound-alphabetic letter relationships of the English language authentically, then, reading becomes a reality. Also, in teaching the sound-alphabetic letter relationships of the English language, we actualize efficiency for literacy in that we are, additionally, simultaneously, teaching, listening, speaking, spelling, vocabulary and the tools of writing.
As a classroom teacher of Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade students. I had great success with "actually" teaching children to read. However, upon evolving, into the role teacher-librarian, my role changed from actually teaching children to read to inspiring children to read.
Even though, in my role as librarian, I had the pleasure of reading many alphabet stories to children. But, alas, although enjoyable, funny, and delightful, they were incomplete because none included sufficient sound-alphabetic letter relationships of the English language to effictively teach children to read through the rudiments of the English language, the ABC's
I became unfulfilled in my mission to inspire children to read if they did not enter my library doors as proficient readers, already! Due to the fact there was no existing book on the library shelves or bookstore shelves written to represent the English alphabet with sufficient representation of the variance of the letter sounds. Consequently, I was dissatisfied in not presenting the English alphabet in its totality to build a comprehensive foundation for reading literacy. Further, I could not truly actualize the theme for my library: Reading empowerment starts @your library!
Additionally, as a literacy professional, I wanted to find a way in which I, as a teacher-librarian independently, as well as through collaborative endeavors with parents, teachers, and, other educators could contribute to address the reading/illiteracy crisis facing our American school system.
I spent countless hours in trying to problem solve a way in which I, as a teacher and a librarian could effectively and efficiently teach foundational reading literacy skills as I, simultaneously, read library books to children for enjoyment and to inspire them to read and love literature!
Therefore, the reasons as stated above became the driving force and/or impetus for the creation of
R is for Reading Books. Information imparted is based upon learning how to "best" teach reading using explicit organized phonics via various reading programs taught successfully to children during my thirty plus years as a classroom teacher, Instructional Specialist with an emphasis on reading/writing, and English as a second language teacher prior to become an elementary school librarian.
Subsequently, as a teacher, school librarian, parent, and, now, grandparent, I have synthesized all my learning about how to "best" teach children to read in R is for Reading Books. R is for Reading Books is the different kind of ABC Book I needed as a parent, a grandparent, a teacher, and a librarian. But, it was not to be found on the bookshelves until I wrote it!
"If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." ~Toni Morrison: "And, so I did!" ~ Cheryl E. Hill
R is for Reading Books was the answer to the dilemma that had been percolating in my thoughts for years!
"To discover the secret of reading is to unlock the knowledge playing hide and seek withing the ABC's.
To practice reading is to read books!
