It's been a real joy to write the Dave Brewster Series (so far, I'm still writing more). I grew up in the 60s and 70s, which was truly the renaissance for science fiction, in my opinion. My favorite author has to be Isaac Asimov. With all the great books, the pioneering television programs and state-of-the-art movies of my generation, I was immersed in ideas for other worlds and new technologies that were absolutely amazing to me. Yet, in spite of the special effects and plot twists and turns, at the end the stories were about friendship and good conquering evil.

I have also always loved science. I had the opportunity to study under Professor James Van Allen at the University of Iowa. He was a legend in those times and having the chance to sit in his lectures was a gift that I treasure more with each passing year. More recently, I'm become enthralled with cosmology and quantum physics. When I learned about dark matter, dark energy and multi-verses, I finally realized that Arthur C. Clarke's famous quote was exactly correct: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Those things led me to Dave Brewster, an unemployed accountant in San Diego. I wanted to keep the positive message while adding my own take on where technology might lead us. In the future, mankind had become inwardly focused. Our descendants enjoy their longer lives and focus on academics and leisure. That spark to reach out and grab the brass ring is gone.

Showdown Over Neptune is the first episode in Dave Brewster's new adventure. It chronicles how he ends up in the thirty-second century leading mankind out to the stars again. While there is plenty of action and other-worldly creatures, it remains a positive story about hope and the future. I hope you choose to take this journey with Dave and me.
