Why are business case competitions important? They teach future leaders how to translate classroom knowledge into positive results. Analyzing a situation, diagnosing a problem, formulating and presenting a recommendation, and gaining approval from executive leadership is one of the best processes you can learn in business school to ensure success. You are not only codifying textbook learning, you are also learning to incorporate it with teamwork, interpersonal communication, and influence. Experts Jason Rife, Kara Kravetz Cupoli, and Marc Cosentino share insight and tips in this must-have guide.

KARA KRAVETZ CUPOLI: Kara is the Director of the Full-Time MBA program at UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School. Prior to her role at UNC Chapel Hill, Kara spent 18 years at the University of Florida, most recently as the Senior Director of Student Affairs & MBA Engagement. As part of this role, she coached case competition teams for over a decade. Kara and Jason developed a proven and repeatable method of preparing successful MBA case competition teams for the UF MBA program. This success led to a stunning number of competition victories, but also to increased student satisfaction with the program and improved performance in their post-MBA careers. Kara earned her PhD from the University of Florida. She also holds an MS from Florida State University and a BA from the Pennsylvania State University. JASON RIFE: Jason is the Director of Graduate Business Career Services at the University of Florida. Before joining UF, he was a strategy consultant for McKinsey & Company and held corporate roles with ExxonMobil and John Deere. For the past five years, Jason has applied his experience with building and communicating recommendations for senior executives toward coaching MBA students on landing top-tier jobs and winning case competitions. During his time at UF, the full-time MBA program has made record gains in placement rates and starting salaries. In 2016 the program was ranked #2 globally in Student Assessment of Career Services by The Economist. UF MBA Case Competition teams have amassed 16 first-place wins since 2013 with Kara and Jason as co-coaches. Jason earned his MBA from Duke University and his bachelor's from Texas Tech University. MARC COSENTINO: Cosentino is the CEO of CaseQuestions.com and the author of several best-selling books on consulting. For almost three decades Cosentino's work has towered over the field of case interviews. Case in Point was called the "MBA Bible" by The Wall Street Journal.
