The first duty of one who wishes to faithfully write the history of a modern-day war is to obtain the orders, dispatches and reports that were sent and received throughout its duration. These documents in their entirety form what one may call the framework for the history of that war, a cornerstone upon which the author must build his work. Previous historians of the 1815 campaign seem not to have been concerned with this necessity and have for this reason produced incomplete accounts filled with falsehoods, the most serious of which was to accuse Napoleon of intentions he had never had. While it is nearly impossible to gather every last order, dispatch and report relating to the war of 1815, one may, through diligent research, acquire as great a number as possible. Heretofore, we have merely been aware of the few orders published by Marshal Grouchy based on his correspondence book and that of Marshal General Soult. Colonel Baron Stoffel wrote the above in 1905. It remains true to this day.
The Operations of the Armée du Nord: 1815 is the definitive collection of French military correspondence for the Waterloo campaign. Thousands of pages of transcriptions - with many hundreds representing new material seen within these pages for the first time.
The Concentration contains the daily correspondence starting with June 5, the day the first major movements to the frontier were ordered and June 12, the day before Soult began implementing the final dispositions.
The volumes of this series provide thousands of transcriptions of French correspondence, and represent a major step in realizing Stoffel's vision. NOTE - This is a reference. A future volume will provide analysis and select translations. These volumes contain transcriptions of primary source material. In the Summer of 2015, several important and previously unseen sources for the military events of 1815 were discovered. This was incredibly exciting. The new letters and order registries allowed a greater understanding of the archival material. For the past 150 years, numerous items from the archives, such as notes and drafts of orders, had existed, but without context or sequence.
The puzzle was finally revealing its image.
But to see the image, one needs to assemble a great number of the pieces, including a good number of the most critical communications. This reference is the most complete collection of French military correspondence for 1815 ever assembled. Why would I care if I don't speak French? If you have an interest in Napoleon's military campaigns, then presumably you would wish to have a comprehensive and truthful accounting of events. This research has had such a major impact on our understanding of 1815 that it is certain similar references for other years and campaigns would be equally revealing. We would like to continue this effort to document the operations of all of Napoleon's armies for each year they operated, but this can only be done if there is a receptive audience. Each chapter begins with a listing of its letters with a summary in English. The publisher's website offers the following for download:
DedicationCe projet est dédié aux soldats de l'Armée du Nord qui, en 1815, motivés par le simple principe qu'une nation a le droit de choisir son propre gouvernement, ont traversé des rivières pour attaquer deux armées qui se préparaient à envahir leur pays.L'Armée du Nord était dirigée héroïquement, mais pas toujours avec compétence, et elle était trahie quotidiennement.C'est seulement par un compte rendu complet des événements que nous puissions apprécier ce que les soldats de l'Armée du Nord ont accompli: grace à leur sacrifice, leur drapeau flotte encore aujourd'hui.* * *This project is dedicated to the soldiers of the Armée du Nord, who, in 1815, motivated by the simple premise that a nation has the right to choose its own government, crossed a river and attacked two armies that were preparing to invade their country. The Armée du Nord was led heroically, though not always competently, and it was betrayed daily.Only with a complete accounting of these events can we appreciate what the soldiers of the Armée du Nord accomplished: because of their sacrifice, their flag still flies.
