About the Author

Debbie Johnson

Debbie brings her business expertise and extensive nonprofit volunteering to bear, helping clients be strategic in their philanthropy.

Her career includes over 20 years working for AT&T/Lucent Technologies, rising through the sales organization and ending as vice president, then as a consultant for the past dozen + years. Her nonprofit experience, both hands-on volunteering as well as serving on nearly two dozen boards, in all positions including five times as president or board chair, gives her perspective into community issues and associated giving plans.

While she was always encouraged to give to those less fortunate than herself, she had no idea how rewarding true philanthropy could be until she participated in and ultimately ran AT&T ‘s local community philanthropy in Cincinnati, Ohio.  She found these efforts to be more fulfilling than the job itself, even though she loved her work.

Debbie is a native Nebraskan, graduated from the University of Nebraska and took additional advanced coursework from MIT and Peter Senge (The Fifth Discipline). She has written articles for many publications, both print and on-line, and has enjoyed many speaking engagements and has led many seminars on various topics as well.

Sam Woollard

Sam is passionate about connecting the business community with the nonprofit community so that they can effectively work together to address community challenges.

After graduating with a degree in social work, she initially set out on a direct client service track but quickly learned that her strengths lay in administration and connecting different parts of the social services system. For the last 30 years of working in the social services sector with nonprofits, foundations, businesses and government entities, she facilitated strategic planning and led community conversations but became increasingly aware of the lack of connection and understanding between the business and nonprofit sectors so sought to figure out a way to connect the two. Her work with Successful Giving allows her to do just that.

Sam grew up in a family that did not have many financial resources but had a strong commitment to each other and serving the community. Her mom was a youth leader who often brought home young people who were having a difficult time. Hearing their stories led Sam to understand how fortunate she was to have such support in her life. Her mom’s compassion and commitment to serving the community has had a lifelong impact in the choices she has made with her career.

Sam was born in England and moved to the United States when she was fourteen. She is grateful that philanthropy was at the forefront of her childhood and thankful that every day she gets to work with people who want to make the world a better place.
