In Three Cities in the Making of a Rabbi: Vienna, Washington, and Jerusalem, Rabbi Joshua O. Haberman discusses his youth in Vienna and academic studies there, the fall of Vienna and his narrow escape from being arrested by a Nazi storm trooper, his passage to America where he continued his rabbinical and university studies, and his long and productive career as a rabbi. He also describes his sabbaticals in Israel and travels around the world, where he met with many significant spiritual and political leaders, and his many personal and professional milestones, including his marriage to Maxine and their raising four children. Throughout these adventures Rabbi Haberman comments on his own life experiences and the events in the world around him with humor, wisdom, and a philosophical perspective.

About the Author

Born in Vienna, Austria, Rabbi Joshua O. Haberman was a student at the Rabbinical Seminary and the University of Vienna when the Nazi invasion of 1938 forced him to flee his native country. He continued studies at the Hebrew Union College and the University of Cincinnati, was ordained as rabbi, and earned a doctorate in modern Jewish theology. Prior to his election as Senior Rabbi at the Washington Hebrew Congregation in 1969, he served as Interim Rabbi in Mobile, Alabama, Assistant Rabbi at Temple Beth Zion of Buffalo, and Rabbi of Har Sinai Temple in Trenton. He has taught as an adjunct professor in all area universities, preached at the White House, published three books, and written scholarly papers, including articles in the Encyclopedia Judaica. He is the founding chairman of the Foundation for Jewish Studies, the largest provider of Jewish adult study programs in the Washington area, and Rabbi Emeritus of Washington Hebrew Congregation.

He lives in Rockville, Maryland, and keeps a second home in Jerusalem to be near his large family in Israel.
