9780989108607: Another World IS Possible: Freedom, Economic Truth, and Creating a Society of Humanness

Synopsis

We are told we live in the freest country on earth. So why do most of us feel powerless? In Another World IS Possible, Colby Hopkins argues that the problem starts with the words themselves. "Freedom," "democracy," and "the economy" have been defined for us by the people who benefit from those definitions, and the debate we are handed is built to keep us fighting each other instead of them.

Part 1 takes freedom and democracy apart and rebuilds them for a society where every person's actions affect everyone else. Part 2 goes after the foundations of mainstream economics - human nature, incentive, rational choice, competition, GDP, growth - and shows how many of them are assumptions dressed up as truths. Part 3 turns to what comes next: humanness as the measure of a good society, and the tools Occupy Wall Street used to practice direct democracy, from consensus process to leveled horizontal organizing you can start in your own city block.

Written by an organizer, not an academic, this is a book for anyone who suspects the system is rigged and wants to know what to do about it.
