The Facts of the Matter

Our country remains a remarkable, unparalleled and bountiful nation, but there are too many Americans who have become grumpy and entitled; mistrusting and cynical; exhausted and withdrawn. And America has changed; some think not for the better. There are many reasons for this, one being that we are an incredibly diverse nation with widely varying perspective. Worse yet, we have not had access to the facts. We have tons of information, about everything from the political situation, our economy, social issues, our culture -- pretty much every area of modern life. But the information is often presented with spin, bias and agenda or perceived through filters based on our age, gender, and experience. When it comes to seeking solutions, it is time for us to once again embrace our sense of perspective, our spirit, our confidence, and above all, our sense of humor.

Standing on a solid foundation of education and experience, author Mack W. Borgen, removes the tint from our lenses by presenting unvarnished data. He does not try to persuade or push a position. Rather, he simply brings facts to the fore and lets us determine what they mean. He suggests that by having access to objective reality makes it possible for us to regain our sense of community and our commonality. Best of all, we can -- working together -- make a significant difference.

For those who love facts, care about the truth, and understand the power and the relevance of reason, this book delivers unyielding encouragement and the raw materials for creating a better future for us all. This book has a passion for setting the record straight. His book is a treasure trove of solid, fun, and at times even fascinating information we, as a people, can put to good use.

From the Inside Flap:
Our country remains both remarkable and unparalleled, but it has been changing – and some folks think not always for the better. There are many reasons for this, but among the key underlying causes are that we are an incredibly diverse nation, and we have not had easy access to the “facts.” Sure, we have tons of information, about everything from our political situation and our economy to social issues and our culture – pretty much every area of modern life. But they are often presented with bias and agenda or perceived through densely shaded filters based on our age, gender, and experience. When it comes to seeking solutions, we need to again embrace our sense of perspective. We need to regain our spirit, our confidence, and, at times, our sense of humor.Standing on a solid foundation of education and experience, author Mack W. Borgen removes the tint from our lenses and presents unvarnished data. He doesn't try to persuade or push a position. Rather, he simply brings facts to the fore and allows us to determine what they mean. He suggests that having access to an objective and shared reality, makes it possible to even find a begrudging sense of community and commonality. Then we can -- working together -- make a difference.Borgen's approach begins by creating an analytical baseline that he calls Modern America; the country from 1957 to the present. He also posits Current America; the country as it is today. This provides a means of comparison so we can look with clear eyes at where we were and where we are: we have both context and perspective. From that viewing point Borgen presents the facts relating to business, economics, and politics. For example: · Economics - 90% of all Americans still self-identify themselves as “middle class” and yet the U.S. is ranked 98th in the world in income inequality – between Cameroon and Uruguay. · Politics – Persons age 70 and over are the fastest growing part of the U.S. electorate. · Politics – The 2012 Presidential Election was the first time in U.S. history where neither major party nominee had served in the military. · Business and Economics – The $15.1 Trillion U.S. economy is still more than twice that of No. 2 China ($7.3 Trillion). Any one of these facts may at first seem to be independent from the others, or, on the surface, possibly just trivia. However, digging deeper and taken together, they start to paint a picture of where we are as a people and a nation. For those who love facts, care about the truth, and understand both the power and the relevance of reason, this book delivers encouragement and the raw materials for creating a better future for us all. Borgen's passion for setting the record straight and his caring for who we can be inspire us to do better. This book is a treasure trove of solid information we, as a people, can put to good use.
