Author Carol de Giere has gathered fresh comments from original cast members, Stephen Schwartz, friends of the late John-Michael Tebelak (who conceived the musical and directed the first productions), Godspell movie cast members, and others. Carol de Giere previously wrote the Stephen Schwartz biography "Defying Gravity: The Creative Career of Stephen Schwartz, from Godspell to Wicked." She is the editor of two online newsletters: "The Schwartz Scene" and "Musical Writerzine." She is a fan of "Godspell" and other musicals and holds master’s degrees in library science and professional writing.
After her wonderful biography of songwriter Stephen Schwartz (Defying Gravity), it is no surprise that Carol de Giere has written such a wonderful history of Schwartz's beloved hit Godspell. With her refreshingly readable prose and loving attention to detail, she brings readers along as the show grows from a college workshop, to an Off-Broadway success--and finally a worldwide phenomenon...Anyone who loves musicals will enjoy seeing how Godspell came to be. There is also fascinating coverage of how the film version and Broadway revival evolved. Highly recommended! John Kenrick, Musicals101.com
