Railroads were heavily used in Michigan for logging from the 1870s through the first decade of the twentieth century. This book covers the state's pine belt counties, which constitute the northern two-thirds of the lower peninsula. For each county covered, a map shows the logging railroads that could be located, and the history of those lines is provided. To the extent that they engaged in logging activities, separate chapters are included for common carrier railroads. Numerous historical maps are included, and the entire book is minutely indexed.
