During the American Revolution, the British military offered freedom to enslaved blacks willing to fight for king and country. But this offer was only available to those whose owners had joined the rebellion. Slaves fleeing Loyalist owners were sent back in chains. Those who did serve in the British military were often abandoned during retreats in order to slow the pace of an oncoming American army. Some were even resold into slavery. For a great many blacks these promises of liberty were a complete façade, designed only to ruin the profitable plantation economies of the newly-founded United States. As each southern colony fell to the rebellion, many blacks did indeed gain their freedom and followed the exodus of Loyalists south to East Florida. The plight of these people in this tragic era of African-American history demands to be heard.
