Simply put, the Critical Connection Workbook will help you become a better parent of young teens. It offers every parent of young teens (ages 10-14) the opportunity to dig deeply into their beliefs, their practices, and their blind spots. It is designed to challenge even the most experienced parents to become more effective during the challenging years of early adolescence. The Critical Connection Workbook will help you analyze your own childhood experiences, your current family situation, and your future family life. Consequently, you will make action steps to form a healthier, happier family life. This thought-provoking workbook is a companion to the well-regarded book, Critical Connection: A Practical Guide to Parenting Young Teens. Individuals or small groups will move into deeper introspection, discussion, and planning about being a better parent at this crucial stage in every child's life. It's like having a personal trainer or a life coach for your family life.

Andy Kerckhoff is a middle school teacher and the author of the blog Growing Up Well and the book Critical Connection. He and his wife have been married for twenty-one years and have two teenage children. Kerckhoff has served in various educational roles for twenty-two years, including as an elementary school principal in Montana and a high school teacher in Dallas, Texas. He currently serves as a seventh-grade English and World Geography teacher at Westminster Christian Academy in Saint Louis, Missouri. He also coaches middle school cross country.
Since the release of Critical Connection, a number of people have requested a workbook. It is only natural that some parents who are already in a book club, dinner group, or church small group would want to discuss in depth some of the parenting issues raised in the book. Others might just want to dig deeper into their own personal analysis.
This workbook is designed, like its companion book, to be highly practical, thought provoking, and easy to use and re-use. It is organized topically; therefore, a group can easily pick which topics they want to read and discuss, cafeteria style.
This workbook is to be used any way the user wishes. There is no system. It's a resource. Feel free to do whatever seems best. Here are a few options:
o just think about the questions without writing anything
o pick only a few questions to explore in long written responses
o discuss every question in a chapter over several small group meetings
Quotes from the original book are in bold italics and have the page numbers in parentheses. If you own the book, I recommend reading each chapter before answering the questions. This will yield the best results.
I sincerely hope that these questions provoke deep introspection, conversation, and application in the life of your family.
