About the Author

Antoine Vanner’s own adventurous life, his knowledge of human nature, his passion for nineteenth-century history and his understanding of what was the cutting-edge technology of that time, make him the ideal chronicler of the life of Nicholas Dawlish RN. "I find the entire Victorian era fascinatng," says Vanner, "because for my generation it’s ‘the day before yesterday’ so to speak. It’s history that you can almost touch. Our grandparents grew up in that period – my grandfather was born in the year of Britannia’s Wolf – and you heard a lot from them about that time. My grandmother could recall seeing Queen Victoria, and my grandmother-in-law saw Paul Kruger, who as a boy had been on the Great Trek in 1835. So much in that period was similar to what we still have and you feel you could live easily in it, and then you hit some aspects – especially those associated with social conventions and attitudes – that make it seem wholly alien. It was a time of change on every front – intellectual, scientific, medical, social, political and technological – and how people seem to have accommodated so well to the changes was quite remarkable." In 1881, British naval officer Nicholas Dawlish facesruthless revolutionaries threatening the nation's economy.

 This historical spythriller reveals attempts by the insurgents to design, build and operate thefirst submersible craft in a deadly underwater campaign, which thwarts theRoyal Navy's conventional capabilities.

Dawlish and an American agent are antagonists in theirattempts to bring submarines into use as legitimate naval weapons.

 The pace is fast andfurious, with plot twists and turns, as Dawlish tries to capture the prototypesubmarine and either get into the hands of the English or keep it out of thehands of the United States.

 The description ofbeing aboard the submarine with its inventor in New York Harbor is so realisticthat one senses the claustrophobia and fear of being drowned under the sea.

 As the plot turns toCuba, the submarine ends up on a bay on the coast of Cuba in the middle of aninsurrection against Spain. The author's narrative of Yellow Fever and itsaffects are realistic and horrifying.

Britannia's Shark by Antoine Vanner continues the adventuresof Commander Nicholas Dawlish, serving in the Royal Navy as the Victorian Eradraws to a close. The series so far has explored the Turkish Navy and riverconflict in Paraguay and this time we move to conflict with the Fenian movementfor Irish independence and their involvement with John Philip Holland whoinvented the first practical submarine.

The Fenians are a threat to British interests but as they areoperating in the US diplomatic necessity means that no overt action can betaken. Dawlish soon finds himself headed for New York undercover with orders tostop them using the submarine against Britain. When he is unsuccessful he mustfollow them to Cuba and aid the revolutionaries to complete his mission.
This was an interesting read for its insights into both earlysubmarine development and the situation in Cuba at the time.
 
As is now to be expected from Vanner this was a well writtennovel with a good plot that flowed smoothly holding my attention well. Icontinue to enjoy Dawlish's adventures for their insights into the navalmatters at this time and look forward to reading more. Both this book and theseries as a whole are highly recommended.
