About the Author

Dr David West gained his first degree in Philosophy from the University of Exeter and his Doctorate from the University of Leicester. He taught at University for several years including a happy time at Acadia University in Canada. His business career included Ford Motor Company and Xerox, primarily in line management roles. He was a partner in an accounting firm before creating and founding 'The Working Manager', now a very successful business. The 'Employee engagement and the failure of leadership' was written to express Dr West's disgust with many modern day management practices. His next book, 'The Goat, the Devil and the Freemason,' was a fun return to Philosophy. He is in the final stages of a monograph on 17th/18th century Deism, prior to commencing work on his next book, 'The Happy Lodge'.

Review

Freemasonry has faced many challenges since the formation of the first Grand Lodge in 1717 and today many lodges are short of candidates, without ritual to perform. Throughout our history we have faced the same two options; to sit back and complain or make the changes demanded of us. David West's book shows us a way to rise to the challenges we now face. It is not a theoretical account but one based on the real life experience of St Laurence Lodge No. 5511. This book will not only give you interesting and enjoyable work to do, it will also lead you towards candidates. It is subtitled How to find those candidates who have been looking for you all this time and this is no empty boast. St Laurence genuinely initiates three to four candidates a year and genuinely does have a growing waiting list. It really does take most of its second and third degrees out to other lodges and really does run an extra meeting each year when a guest team carries out an initiation. Without doubt, David West and Lawrie Morrisson are two of the most far sighted and innovative Freemasons in England. Their lodge embraces a constant stream of new ideas and uses all the tools of modern technology to spread the message of Freemasonry. Its website is the envy of the many who seek to follow in the footsteps of St Laurence Lodge No. 5511 and replicate its success. This book shows how they did it.
