"An excellent resource for educating and inspiring young minds on the subjects of architecture, engineering, and the built environment" - Architect's Toy Box
Aimed at young, enquiring minds, An Igloo on the Moon explores how and why we build. Beginning with the igloo, whose origins are lost in time, and culminating in the latest 3D-printing technology for lunar habitation, the book weaves together themes and ideas to create an unfolding visual story. Illustrated with a sequence of extraordinary collages, specially created by artist Adrian Buckley, the book ranges through history and across continents. Underlying the narrative is an awareness of environmental issues and the need to reconnect with sustainable patterns of building. It is a book to engage the next generation of architects - and their parents and teachers.

Adrian Buckley is a renowned graphic artist. For An Igloo on the Moon he has created a compelling series of inhabited landscapes, rich with ideas and possibilities. David Jenkins is an architect who writes about architecture with insight and wit. He has written and edited numerous critically acclaimed books, including Foster 40 and The Strange Death of Architectural Criticism.
Gr 4 Up—In this richly illustrated volume, Jenkins details notable structures and explains how they accommodate our needs. The work opens by examining what various cultures have used for shelter for centuries, such as adobe, snow, and reeds. Through seven thematic sections, Jenkins discusses familiar constructions, such as viaduct bridges, as well as unexpected additions, including Shoji screens and verandas for the purposes of ventilation. The author also addresses structural technology and the amazing feats of engineering behind the Chartres Cathedral in France and the underground churches of Lalibela in Ethiopia. The last section is where the title of the book comes into play: How will architecture evolve in the future? Will humans be living in igloos on the moon? This section smartly explores some of the failures of architectural ideas while revealing the future possibilities. Graphic designer Buckley's imaginative collages depict buildings across the world and reference different art movements and time periods. For instance, a pterosaur hovers above London's Crystal Palace. The author addresses topical subjects such as sustainability and environmental awareness. The succinct paragraphs of factual text that accompany each image are beautifully descriptive. The only drawback is the absence of a table of contents and an index. VERDICT An imaginative addition to large architecture and environmental studies collections to engage readers and stimulate critical thinking.—Jessica Cline, New York Public Library
