The author brings a rigorously trained scientific mind to the subject of sailing, tempered by a long lifetime of hands-on experience. Examination shows that several widely-held notions, such as hull speed, planing, and the effect of wetted surface, including the traditional Froude method of predicting ship resistance from model testing, are misleading or defective, needing to be replaced by better ways of thinking. Appendices carry the discussion into rigorous detail for those who are interested. Part 3 introduces the Index of Sailing Speed (ISS). Despite its apparent simplicity, the Index takes a fierce hold of reality, relating a vessel's three characteristic speeds (Greatest, Natural, and Average) to those of hundreds of others of like dimensions reviewed by the author, be they sailing warships, yachts, scows, dinghies, or catamarans. The Tables of the ISS (Appendix I) will be of value to designers, racing sailors, cruisers, or historians wishing to check old speed claims.
