The author brings a rigorously trained scientific mind to the subject of sailing, tempered by a long lifetime of hands-on experience. Examination shows that several widely-held notions, such as hull speed, planing, and the effect of wetted surface, including the traditional Froude method of predicting ship resistance from model testing, are misleading or defective, needing to be replaced by better ways of thinking. That sets a tone for the book which has three parts. Part 1 starts with a discussion of the character-building aspects of sailing, not to be found in other pastimes and sports, and the importance of matching boat to sailor. Then it creates a structure trying to bring some order to the complicated, often irrational relationship between sailing craft and those who conceive, design, build, outfit, sell and sail them. Part 1 ends with an analysis of the elements of good looks to a level and degree not seen elsewhere. Part 2 introduces wind and sea, normally benign, but having potential for great destructiveness and upset, including sea-wave capsize. It goes on to examine and explain intuitively hydro and aerodynamics applied to sailing. Lay readers have pronounced the discussion of complex ideas remarkably understandable. Appendices carry the discussion into rigorous detail for those who are interested. Part 3 introduces the Index of Sailing Speed (ISS). Despite its apparent simplicity, the Index takes a fierce hold of reality, relating a vessel's three characteristic speeds (Greatest, Natural, and Average) to those of hundreds of others of like dimensions reviewed by the author, be they sailing warships, yachts, scows, dinghies, or catamarans. The Tables of the ISS (Appendix I) will be of value to designers, racing sailors, cruisers, or historians wishing to check old speed claims. The book contains helpful Appendices, plus a Nomenclature, Glossary, Bibliography, and Index.
