On a whim, I picked up a hitchhiker after years of not doing so. He would be a travelling companion to while away some dusty, empty miles ahead of me.
At first, I thought him totally naïve. He stared at everyday things like a child seeing something the first time. Then I began to notice complexities – his need to carry spare food at all times, his fluency in odd languages, and his fanatical vegetarianism.
His story came out slowly. He was a newly released ex-con having served seven years for manslaughter. He openly acknowledged his guilt and his deep remorse. He talked about scams and prison escapes; love, justice and injustice; the philosophical differences between ancient Greeks and Jainism; and characters from walks of life I would probably never encounter.
The mystery that drew me on though, was the one thing he wouldn't speak about – what was the crime that this seemingly likeable, decent man had committed? It was a mystery I couldn't let go of.
Inspired by actual events that made legal history. Shortlisted for the Rakuten Emerging Writers Award.
