With increased access to the media, including social media, our children are constantly bombarded with images of beauty that do not reflect the diversity inherent in our society.
Young girls of color are especially affected, as they are often shown via the media that there is an ideal aesthetic, and if you do not resemble that aesthetic then you are not considered beautiful.
Through beautifully written rhyme and gorgeous illustrations, Don't You know You are Beautiful Just the Way You Are! encourages young girls of color to love and embrace their unique beauty and characteristics, through a loving conversation between a mother, and her young daughter Destiny, who does not like the way she looks.
However, after talking to her Mom
My little shining star, don't you know you are beautiful just the way you are!
she learns a valuable lesson about self-love and acceptance.
Don't You Know You are Beautiful Just the Way You Are!will foster dialogue between parents, guardians, educators, and the children they care for. This story will inspire children to look within themselves and to their loved ones for their examples of beauty and for their role models. This is the ideal book for bedtime reading and for use in schools as an instructional tool to Educate, Entertain and Empower young girls.

Don't You know You are Beautiful Just the Way You Are! was inspired by a conversation I overheard between my daughter and my niece discussing things they did not like about themselves. I was shocked, to say the least because I constantly tried to reinforce to my daughter that she was an intelligent, beautiful young lady inside and out. However, the influence of the media is strong, and young girls of color are especially vulnerable to its effects. This experience sparked my creation of the I Love Me series of books which empower children to love themselves unconditionally. I will continually strive to write books that touch the souls of readers and that promote diversity and inclusion in children's literature.
