This volume comprises 10 chapters written by undergraduate members of Michigan State University’s Social Science Scholars Program. Under faculty guidance, the authors each undertook an original research project. The goal was to explore a topic of personal interest and, in the process, carry out systematic analyses that involved drawing on multiple perspectives and formulating logical arguments. The subjects Scholars chose range from the media’s reporting of gun crimes and the ethics of rationing healthcare to the effectiveness of microcredit initiatives in the Developing World, and the social, political and psychological effects of mass incarceration. All chapters represent ambitious projects and display high quality work as published here. This is the first of what will now become an annual series of Social Science Scholars Books written by Michigan State students.
