Quirky patients, one-of-a-kind employees, and farm animals set the stage for this humorous, tender, and sometimes irreverent saga of Dr. Carroll James's dental practice. Headphone-clad patients bop in the dental chair while Dr. James tries to work on the moving target; a long-timer happily drops her pants to show off her latest surgical scar; and a lost cell phone drops out of a patient's boxer shorts.
You just can't make this stuff up.
Working from his rural home office, Dr. James juggles family, patients, staff, and occasional livestock as he struggles to maintain his professional decorum. After thirty years of scatterbrained staff and distinct clientele, he often finds himself simply shaking his head with a laugh. Alongside the colorful assistants and hilarious antics, we learn just how challenging--and perilous--dental school can be, as well as witnes the acquisition of a half-built farmette certain to take years to finish, a few errant horses, an intriguing trip to Russia with US-USSR Bridges for Peace, and poignant lessons that, when you're not chuckling at the author's childhood (and sometimes adult) mischief, are sure to touch your heart.

Dr. Carroll James is a graduate of Gettysburg College, receiving his doctorate from the Farleigh-Dickenson University College of Dentistry in 1975. For two years, he practiced as an Associate in Rockville, MD, before establishing a private practice near Bethesda. After fifteen years in private practice, he began a satellite practice in Pyleton, MD (a fictional town). When that venture was unexpectedly interrupted, he purchased a home in the nearby rural town of Gloyd (also fictional) in which he established another satellite practice. That office grew exponentially and after another ten years, he moved from Rockville altogether and now enjoys treating patients in Gloyd. Over the course of his career he has contributed articles to health columns, been published in the CMDS Journal, edited a monthly newsletter, lectured to medical students, written a blog, and contributed to the Academy of General Dentistry journal Impact. In addition, he and his family were featured in a human interest TV documentary about his wife's almost-fatal adventure in the jungles of southern Mexico. As a child, Dr. James spent summers at his maternal grandparent's primitive home in the rugged Appalachian heartland of southwest Virginia. This experience forged his passion for serving impoverished peoples throughout the far reaches of the world. Blessed with three children and four live-wire grandchildren, Carroll and his wife, Kate, continue to maintain their valued practice in their rural home.
