Normal, Abnormal, or Paranormal? was written for anyone who feels stuck in life or who might be ripe for an awakening, just as the author was when she enrolled in the most unusual “Consciousness Studies” program offered for a brief period of time at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Classes such as The Philosophy of the Paranormal, Altered States of Consciousness, Near-Death Experiences, Personality Disorders, and Anomalies of the Mind were conducted by Raymond A. Moody, Jr., M.D., PhD., and cumulatively they had a beneficially transformative effect on this student. Author Nancy Tramont took extensive notes she listened to Dr. Moody’s lectures with wonder and awe. Since no textbook existed for the Consciousness Studies program, the author subsequently obtained permission from Dr. Moody to put her notes covering his entire curriculum into book form, with Normal, Abnormal, or Paranormal? being the result. It was Dr. Moody who originally identified the phenomenon known as the “near-death experience,” coining that phrase and bringing it to public awareness. By blending the wisdom of the ancients with his training in medicine and psychiatry, Dr. Moody came to have a unique perspective. Normal, Abnormal, or Paranormal? offers a discussion of twenty-five years of research in consciousness conducted by Dr. Moody and many of his esteemed colleagues, several of whom were guest speakers in the program. Their words were mind-opening to the author, who felt compelled to make Dr. Moody’s work available to a larger audience. In a fascinating and humorous way the professor led his students through the maze of what to consider when researching the many paranormal experiences that people have had throughout history. Such events continue into the present day. Dr. Moody did not endeavor to change his students’ beliefs but instead successfully offered them “a new operating procedure” in the way they see the world and live their lives. This book is an autobiographical narrative of the spiritual awakening of Nancy Tramont, illustrating how she came to interpret her own mystical events from her youth as well as the many more paranormal phenomena which she experienced after the Consciousness Studies program ended. For anyone who feels as this author did, unfulfilled and searching for answers to the deepest of life’s questions, then Dr. Moody’s wisdom as presented in this book will most certainly entertain and educate the reader. It is an excellent place for the beginning student of Consciousness Studies.
