The Village of Darkharrow is the first entry in Places by the Way, a series of short location/adventure modules compatible with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition roleplaying game rules and published under the Open Game License. Chapter 1 describes a modest farming village under threat from evil humanoids in the nearby wilderness, and it may be used by itself as an interesting place in a campaign world. Chapters 2 and 3 add narrative elements that could involve the player characters in determining the fate of Darkharrow and its inhabitants. The Village of Dakrharrow keeps details of the larger world as vague as possible to help you integrate it into your own campaign setting smoothly. As in all Places by the Way modules, the focus is on experiencing interesting places and NPCs, so they are meant to accommodate a wide range of character levels. Where it makes sense to do so, options for scaling encounters are presented.

Even the most epic campaigns need interludes -- places where heroes can regroup and pursue amusing side quests in between world-saving feats of derring-do. Think of Places by the Way as kits for such interludes. The fate of your entire campaign world need not turn on anything that is described in these pages. But even so, the heroes in your campaign will need to refill their empty quivers and packs; buy tools and potions; upgrade their arms and armor. Or they need a safe place to lay up for the night, untroubled by beasts of the wild, so they can heal and recover spells. Every campaign needs changes of pace to make the epic moments seem bigger. We can help you make those changes of pace engaging. We understand that adventure can still be had in places found by the way.
