Writing this book was hard work; it was probably the most difficult and long-suffering task I have ever undertaken. When I began molding the form of it nearly three-and-a-half years ago, even the title and the topic were different. Originally, I wanted to write a work outlining each of the Twelve Steps through other people's stories. Every chapter would highlight another Step in the recovery process. Its title would have been Your Story is Not Yet Finished. Through every person's story and each new Step, I would discover for myself (and pass along to the reader) the process of personal transformation, specifically how it related to recovery from addiction to drugs and alcohol.
However, I began to recognize that I wasn't interested only in the process of personal change from the viewpoint of addiction-recovery. Simultaneously, my online blog Transformation is Real began to shift its focus as well, highlighting and categorizing personal transformation from the rich mosaic of changes that people make in their lives. Despite the differences between each person's story, one common thread revealed itself. From stories of survival after a sexual assault, to the tales behind a tattoo someone chose to mark a personal change, to addiction-recovery fiction and micro-poetry, even stories sharing how service to others leads to meaning and purpose--the one, shared trait to rise from the ashes of stress or trauma to make lasting change was resilience. So, this book Endure was born!
