★ 13th Annual "Best Book Awards" USA Book News (2016) Book Cover DesignIn this charming picture-book sequel to her award-winning Tall Tale, How Dachshunds Came to Be, Kizzie Jones shows us that true friendship is not just about looking past each other's differences ... it's about discovering and celebrating those differences.
"Dachshunds and Pelicans and the Beach, oh my!! This enchanting book combines some of my favorite things to tell a story about friendship. A terrific gift for youngsters of any age. I enjoy reading it to my grandchildren and then listening to them read it to me. I always ask them what the moral is in any story. They have no problem telling me the moral of A Tall Tale About a Dachshund and a Pelican. They even embellish the explanation with examples from Ms. Jones' previous book, How Dachshunds Came to Be: A Tall Tale About a Short Long Dog. We are eagerly awaiting her next book. Bravo Kizzie Jones and Scott Ward!"

I'd been intrigued with pelicans from the moment I watched them plunge into the ocean fishing for their meals in southern Oregon. My interest was rekindled during a trip to Mexico, watching the antics of the brown pelicans. I began contemplating how I might pair up a pelican with a dachshund for a tall tale. Having dedicated my adult life and ministry (I'm a retired minister with the United Church of Christ (UCC) and served 20+ years as a chaplain in the hospital and long-term care settings) to honoring people of all backgrounds, it occurred to me that the dog and bird would be unlikely friends. Could I create a tall tale that honored the uniqueness of each animal yet allowed them to become friends? I dedicated the book to the Interfaith Amigos: Pastor Don Mackenzie, Rabbi Ted Falcon and Sheikh Jamal Rahman - three local men from different traditions who came together after 9/11 to collaborate on ways to promote interfaith dialog. Their clear message, "We can like without being alike."
Goldie the Dachshund is curious about Pelican. They seem similar but they are very different. Will they like each other? In this charming sequel to her award-winning book, How Dachshunds Came to Be, Kizzie Jones shows us that true friendship is not just about looking past each other's differences ... it's about discovering and celebrating those differences.
