Paris 1880, the City of Light Clockwork nobles of the Court promenade through the halls of Versailles, while Watcher spheres and cyborg police menace citizens in the streets. The Royal Physician Scientist works frantically on an automaton designed to replace the failing sovereigns, but will it be ready in time to save the monarchy? In the cafes of Montmartre, Henri paints the common people chafing under the reign of the Augmented monarchs and dreams of a France free of machines. John yearns to capture the essence of beauty in his paintings with the luminous Marie-Ange his muse—and handmaid to the ancient Queen of France. With his brother Henri entangled in revolution, he must choose between the artificial beauty of Court and the movement to restore France. How much humanity can be lost before you are no longer human?

From the Back Cover:
His mother lay dying. Her once-delicate nosejutted from her shrunken cheeks, spider-webbed with wrinkles and spotted with age. She turned her face into the shadows, appearing to beunwilling to show him the wreck that had once been a lovely face.
"Thou farest as fruit that with the frost is taken," John muttered in a lowvoice. She who had been the epitome of all that was beautiful deservedpoetry but the poems that came to mind were not those she wouldappreciate. His chest constricted with pain and he swallowed back tears.
"What did you say? Come closer, I cannot see you," her voice wheezed from the bed. He rose from his chair by the window and stood over her, unsmiling.
"I am here, Mother. You should rest."
She reached up to grasp his hand and he suppressed a shudder of disgust. The skin on her hand was yellowed and hanging from the bones like abadly made bed. It was cold and dry.
