Wilbur Norman Pickering was born in Brazil on April 25, 1934. He lived in Bolivia where his parents were missionaries until he was eleven. He went to high school in Florida, and received a BA from Bryan University, Dayton, TN, in 1956. He returned to Brazil as a missionary in 1961 with Wycliffe Bible Translators--Summer Institute of Linguistics. In 1962 he and his wife began a work with an indigenous people in the Amazon jungle, until 1972. He was chief translation consultant for Wycliffe in Brazil 1967-1972. He was Executive Secretary of a Brazilian Wycliffe, 1978-1984. He holds a Masters in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, TX. He holds a MA and PhD from the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His seminal book, The Identity of the New Testament Text, was published in 1977. After going through many revisions and printings, the present edition was published in 2014 as The Identity of the New Testament Text IV. His second book, A Framework for Discourse Analysis, was published in 1980 (a revision, Framework . . . II, is available from Amazon.com). In 1988 he was a founder and the first president of the Majority Text Society, Dallas, Texas. He has prepared a new edition of the Greek NT that reproduces the archetype of Family 35, with a completely new critical apparatus that includes percentages, as well as six competing published editions. His complete translation of that Text into English has over four thousand footnotes, The second edition of both the Greek Text, The Greek New Testament, according to Family 35, and its translation into English, The Sovereign Creator Has Spoken, Objective Authority for Living, are available in book form from Amazon.com. Of those actively engaged in NT textual criticism, no one holds a more radical view in defense of the inerrant and objective authority of the Biblical Text. This includes the position that the precise original wording has been preserved to our day, and that we can, and do, know what it is.
