Forced to witness his family’s brutal murder, a man is left with an obsession to walk as the sole means to suppress recurring visions that will consume his sanity. On a two-lane Pennsylvania highway, Miller puts one foot in front of the other until his clothes go ragged and his shoes fall away. He is joined by a peculiar drifter whose mission becomes apparent in passing miles. Everything and everyone the man touches dies, making him either executioner or savior. Now, the stranger’s disintegrating health requires a replacement reaper, and Miller is left with a grim decision. The dangling carrot for the man who has lost everything is a reunion with his dead child. Welcome to Candy Land.

Cole Alpaugh's newspaper career began in the early 80s, starting with small daily papers in Maryland and Massachusetts, where his stories won national awards. His most recent job was at a large daily in Central New Jersey, where his "true life" essays included award-winning pieces on a traveling rodeo and an in-depth story on an emergency room doctor that was nominated by Gannett News Service for a 1991 Pulitzer Prize. Cole also did work for two Manhattan-based news agencies, covering conflicts in Haiti, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Thailand and Cambodia. His work has appeared in dozens of magazines, as well as most newspapers in America. Cole’s debut novel, THE BEAR IN A MUDDY TUTU/Camel Press/2011, was a national bestseller in Canada, and he has authored three other novels, including a finalist for the 2015 International Book Awards. The charity he founded a decade ago has supplied thousands of soccer balls to kids in Haiti. Cole is currently a freelance photographer and writer living in Northeast Pennsylvania, where he spends his afternoons watching his youngest daughter hit fuzzy yellow balls.
