Synopsis

Crude, sexist, and racist political items helped galvanize Trump supporters during the 2016 election. Look Away documents and categorizes the vulgar and sexist signs, bumper stickers, T-shirts, and buttons that were part of the fabric of many Trump rallies. Many of the images in Look Away's 176 pages are offensive and tough to stomach, yet they are a vital record of the past election. The book serves as an important reminder to future generations about the break in political discourse that occurred in 2016. In a poignant introduction, author Paul Sherman reveals how his passion for political memorabilia over the last 35 years led him to write this book.

About the Author

Paul Sherman is a writer, newsletter publisher, and conference producer with Tech Wire Media in Washington, D.C. He grew up in Austin, Texas, where he began political item collecting as a young boy. After graduating from Brown University in 1992 with degrees in Political Science and Latin American Studies, he worked as the news assistant at the Mexico City bureau of The New York Times for three years. He then worked as a freelance journalist for two years. In 1999, he earned an M.B.A. from The Wharton School. He lives in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C. with his wife Kelly and two daughters. On weekends, he is often on the pool decks of swim meets or the sidelines of soccer games, cheering on his two daughters.

Review

"I have read the book and studied the photos. Look Away is historic. Paul was brilliant to put this in print. Without evidence like this, no one will believe the crudeness and woman-hate that was part of the election. This very morning while looking at the book it made me cry. It made me wonder if one of my own grandsons might think the signs or buttons would be funny." --From a reader

"I was immediately captivated by the book. The description of historical norms of political memorabilia really drives home the point that Trump's materials represent a new low (not, let's all hope, the new normal). Hopefully the unvarnished images and evidence put forward in Look Away will help connect the dots even more clearly for everyone." --From a reader

"I am not an activist. I am simply a woman who knows in her core when something is not quite right. I can't be silent in those moments, but I don't always know how to best speak out or "do" something. Look Away gave me a way to do that as I gave various copies to libraries and family." --From a reader
