This is a math story about the spoon superheroes who help people measure ingredients for things like chocolate cakes. When their town is hit by a tornado, they help dispense the exact amount of medicines needed. They fly to the rescue as requested. This book also has math worksheets and activity cards for math class. Pre-reading question to ask children: which is more, ½ teaspoon or ¼ teaspoon? Many children think ¼ is correct because they know 4 is larger than 2.When Carolyn's father was young, he once traded a bowl of ice cream for a cup of ice cream. He worried it wasn't a good trade, and he later remembered the story and told his children. Carolyn decided that even young children can learn about measuring and avoid bad trades like that one! When teaching first grade, many children began the fraction unit by thinking 1/100 was a huge number. She wrote this story to help parents provide some fraction readiness at home.

About the Author

Carolyn Wilhelm is a teacher with 28 years of teaching experience in elementary classrooms.  With a BA in elementary education, an MS in the special studies in gifted education, and a MA in K-12 Curriculum and Instruction, she is a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) in the area of middle childhood education.  She wrote stories like this to both entertain and help students in her classroom learn some economics.  She taught grades 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 as well as gifted education classes.
