Synopsis

Van Den Derden Edewaert, Coninc Van Engelant, Rymkronyk is a Middle Dutch verse chronicle recounting the reign of Edward III of England. Written by Jan van Boendale, a noted Flemish clerk and poet, this edition, edited with annotations by J.F. Willems, offers valuable insights into medieval historical writing and linguistic practices. This work provides a unique perspective on the political and cultural landscape of 14th-century Europe through the lens of a contemporary Flemish observer. The chronicle offers a fascinating glimpse into the perceptions and representations of English royalty and Anglo-Flemish relations during a pivotal period in European history. This edition is essential for scholars of medieval history, Dutch literature, and historical linguistics.
