Where does thinking happen?
Not where you think.
Not just in the brain.
An Introduction to the Embodied Mind: Thinking Outside the Head explores one of the most influential ideas in modern cognitive science: that intelligence does not arise from the brain alone but emerges through the dynamic interaction of brain, body, and world.
Drawing on philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and research on artificial intelligence, Aaron Kagan and Charles Lassiter introduce readers to the theory of embodied cognition and explore how it reshapes our understanding of perception, thought, and intelligence.
The book is organized into three parts:

Aaron Kagan is a researcher and writer working at the intersection of cognitive science, philosophy of mind, and artificial intelligence. His work focuses on embodied cognition — the idea that intelligence emerges through the dynamic interaction of brain, body, and environment.
In addition to his academic work, he has contributed to research and strategy on emerging technologies and human-AI interaction, including roles at Google and Meta. He is also the founder of GraspingAI, a consultancy that helps organizations understand and apply advances in artificial intelligence.
Charles Lassiter is Professor of Philosophy at Gonzaga University. His research focuses on philosophy of mind and social epistemology, particularly questions at the intersection of cognition and culture. He also studies trends in the academic philosophy job market.
