Au XIXe siècle et durant une partie du XXe, la plupart des villages, dans les campagnes françaises, avaient un garde champêtre.C’était un personnage important, agissant sous les ordres du maire qui était représentant de la loi. À ce titre, ce dernier profitait parfois de ce pouvoir et mettait souvent en porte-à-faux le garde qui, le plus souvent, était un enfant du village. Son rôle était très large : crieur de rue pour annoncer les évènements communaux ou nationaux, il le faisait avec son tambour, ce qui le rendait sympathique. Cependant, sa fonction ne s’arrêtait pas là : il était également responsable des horloges et des cloches du village, il devait chaque jour contrôler la rentrée et la sortie de l’école, etc. En somme, il assurait le quotidien du village. Asseoir son autorité n’était pas facile, car en tant que représentant du maire, il subissait les critiques et les railleries des villageois.Mais il tirait souvent son épingle du jeu et savait se rendre indispensable. Proche des gens, il pouvait devenir leur héros. Émile, le garde champêtre de ce roman, deviendra ce héros qu’ils attendaient, en résolvant plusieurs enquêtes.
