A woman on the run from her past. A conservation officer tracking her down for answers. A high-stakes chase through the unforgiving wilderness of Northern Ontario.
Jessie Becken has always wanted out. Out of the suffocating routines, the relentless noise, and the man-made destruction. She had a simple plan: save enough money to leave society behind for the solitude of Northern Ontario. But when a devastating realization proves she’s headed down the same grim path as her mother, she stops planning and starts running. Desperate to claim a life on her own terms before it’s too late, she turns to the wilderness, leaving everything behind—including the rugged, unavailable conservation officer she’s gotten too close to.
Ryan Fraser has always lived by a code: protect the land, follow the rules, and provide for his family. But the life he’s carefully built is falling apart, leaving him a stranger in his own home. The only one who truly sees the man behind the badge is his informant—a complication he doesn’t need, no matter how intriguing she is. He keeps his distance, determined to hold the pieces of his life together—until she disappears.
Now they must decide how much they're willing to risk for answers that could destroy them.

Karen Bilger is an agronomist by day and a fiction writer by night. Once her steel-toed work boots come off, she trades soil and crop science for raw creativity, crafting messy, unfiltered stories complete with passion, sass, irony, and deep, honest emotions. Mirroring her own independent spirit, her characters are often solitary souls, outcasts, and those who prefer the quiet freedom of walking alone down a gravel road. Much of her inspiration stems from her love of the outdoors. When she's not in the field or writing, she's off in the wilderness somewhere-hiking, kayaking, camping, or cutting firewood. "The Wolf & the Rabbit" is her first novel in a series based on conservation officers and Northern Ontario. She is currently in the editing stages of the second novel, "The Cedar & the Oak."
