This is the story of one woman’s – and one man’s – search for love, happiness and fulfilment, through all the vicissitudes that life throws at them. How successful they are – you will have to read the story to find out. But it gives nothing away to say that an underlying theme of the book is loudly declared by its title, and is one of which the author reminds us at critical moments as the story unfolds. It prompts us to consider the question whether the trajectory of our lives is guided by a higher power over which we have no control, or whether it merely seems so when we contemplate the effect on our lives of circumstances over which, equally, we have no control. Either way, the book suggests that in the end we have to accept that what is, is. The story, which takes place in Italy and America, is told largely through dialogue, in which the trivial mingles realistically with the consequential, by a narrator who presents scenes with a cinematographer’s eye for detail, so that the absence – some might say the welcome absence – of long descriptive or analytical passages passes largely unnoticed. It is an intriguing story, and one which for the author clearly carries significant emotional heft.
