For fourteen years, Jim Morgan was one of Vancouver's most despised figures.
In On the Edge: Hostility, Hardship, and the Humour that Saved Me, he delivers a raw, darkly funny memoir about life on the frontlines of public service—and the invisible toll it takes on those who show up anyway.
As a Vancouver Parking Enforcement Officer, Jim endured daily abuse, threats, and dehumanization—all while navigating personal loss, unresolved trauma, and PTSD. With razor-sharp wit and unflinching honesty, he exposes the realities behind a job most people never think twice about.
Inside, readers will find:
Perfect for readers of The Night the Lights Went Out by Drew Magary, Educated by Tara Westover, and What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo, On the Edge sits at the intersection of memoir, mental health, and public service reality.
This is not a redemption story.
It’s a survival story.
And sometimes, survival is the only victory that matters.

Jim Morgan was born into the ever-moving life of a Royal Canadian Air Force BRAT (Born, Raised, And Transferred), making most of Canada his backyard. By the time he finished high school, he had moved nine times and lived in six provinces. His restless feet have since carried him across Canada six times, and through parts of the U.S., Cuba, and South Africa. Surrey, BC remains his pin in the map. Jim never chased a career - he chased what was needed. From dishwasher to photojournalist, coal mine assay lab supervisor to Search and Rescue volunteer, wildfire fighter to IT specialist, he showed up fully to every job he ever held. Not out of restlessness, but out of responsibility. There was always a family depending on him. That same thread - service - eventually led him to fourteen years as a Parking Enforcement Officer on the streets of Vancouver. It was there, in the daily friction between public expectation and municipal duty, that the cumulative toll of a life spent showing up for others began to follow him home. The breaking point came quietly - not in a headline, but in a moment when he realized how close he was to becoming someone he did not recognize. He sought help before that line was crossed.Within days of his retirement, he learned his father was terminally ill. Four months later, his father and his son were gone. Grief layered itself onto a life already worn thin.Through therapy and honest self-examination, he chose not to turn away from what the years had done. His writing reflects that same approach - direct, unflinching, and grounded in lived experience. Jim lives in Surrey, British Columbia. He supports the Wounded Warriors Weekend Foundation based out of Nipawin, SK. When he's not writing, he photographs the night sky - drawn to the reminder that light is most visible against darkness.
