Virginia Dean was born in 1933, the youngest of 5 girls. The Great Depression had left some scars but it hadn’t dampened the spirits of her loving family. They moved to Wellesley Hills, a suburb of Boston, just before her 10th birthday and when her dad asked her if she had a wish for her special day she answered in the affirmative.Unbeknownst to her and to the family members her answer would change their lives forever. Her birthday wish is revealed in the opening pages of My Halcyon Years and it is from there that Virginia starts her recollections. The year is 1943 and WW II is in full swing. In a series of vignettes, Virginia recalls the highlights, events and fascinating people that she meets on her journey from adolescence through her twenties. In 1954 she receives a BS degree in Journalism from Boston University and, with that in hand, she sets forth in search of a career in media. Her dream job finally comes true when WABC Radio in NY City hires her. However TV is about to take over the airwaves and her job is in jeopardy. Never fear ... she’s found her dream man too so all else pales by comparison.Virginia now lives in North Carolina with two sons nearby and a daughter and son-in-law in upstate New York. February of 1943 was a pivotal time for me. I was the youngest of 5 girls living in Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts (a suburb of Boston)and my 10th birthday was fast approaching. Our country was deep into WW II by then, but I was too young to truly understand what that entailed. For me it was mainly a time of great drama so when my father asked me if I had a special 10 year old wish for my big day I had a ready answer. “Dad,” I said, “I want a British sailor” and that's exactly what I got and where my story begins. Little did I know how exciting the next 20 years would be. I lived it, I loved it and I want you to experience it too. This is just a partial list of the star studded people, situations and career choices that I want to share with you:WW II (visions from the home front), Sylvia Plath, Margaret Bourke-White, Gregory Peck, John F. Kennedy, Howard Cossell, Benny Goodman, John Entwistle, KEY-T TV, Santa Barbara, Ca., WABC Radio, NY, NY.
