About the Author

William Thorn (1781-1843) was 30 years old when he joined the expeditionary force to Java. He had previously served with the British army in India. The materials for his book were largely sketches and details jotted down at the end of each military action and notes based on personal observations and official reports. He retired from the army in 1825 and died in Germany in 1843.
