The new edition preserves many of the features that users praised from previous editions, along with numerous updates in content, style, and organization. Revisions include an additional chapter on the treatment of historical writing, with an emphasis on history as storytelling. There is a more in-depth discussion of electronic research, including the pros and cons of online research and accessibility to and assessment of current online resources. A new section features the use of photos as evidence and expanded discussions of historical causality and gender-based history. As before, both old and new exercises draw on a wide variety of historical texts. This new edition of The Methods and Skills of History will continue to be an invaluable resource for students and instructors alike.
About the Author
MICHAEL J. SALEVOURIS is Professor Emeritus of History at Webster University, St. Louis. In addition to various reviews and articles, he is the author of Learning American History: Critical Skills for the Survey Course (with Conal Furay, 1997), and Riflemen Form: The War Scare of 1859–1860 in England (1982).
The late CONAL FURAY was Professor Emeritus at Webster University, where he taught such courses as American Business History and The Western in Film and Story. He is the author of Learning American History: Critical Skills for the Survey Course (with Michael J. Salevouris, 1997), and The Grass-Roots Mind in America: The American Sense of Absolutes (1977).
