Remove built-in supply chain weak points to more effectively balance supply and demand

Demand-Driven Inventory Optimization and Replenishment shows how companies can support supply chain metrics and business initiatives by removing the weak points built into their inventory systems. Beginning with a thorough examination of Just in Time, Efficient Consumer Response, and Collaborative Forecasting, Planning, and Replenishment, this book walks you through the mathematical shortcuts set up in your management system that prevent you from attaining supply chain excellence. This expanded second edition includes new coverage of inventory performance, business verticals, business initiatives, and metrics, alongside case studies that illustrate how optimized inventory and replenishment delivers results across retail, high-tech, men's clothing, and food sectors.

Inventory optimization allows you to avoid out-of-stock situations without impacting the bottom line with excessive inventory maintenance. By keeping just the right amount of inventory on hand, your company is better able to meet demand without sacrificing the cost-effectiveness of other supply chain strategies. The trick, however, is determining "just the right amount"—and this book provides the background and practical guidance you need to do just that.

  • Examine the major supply chain strategies of the last 30 years
  • Remove the shortcuts that prohibit supply chain excellence
  • Optimize your supply/demand balance in any vertical
  • Overcome systemic weaknesses to strengthen the bottom line

Inventory optimization is benefitting companies around the world, as exemplified here by case studies involving Matas, PWT, Wistron, and Amway. When inefficiencies are built into the system, it's only smart business to identify and remove them—and implement a new streamlined process that runs like a well-oiled machine. Demand-Driven Inventory Optimization and Replenishment is an essential resource for exceptional supply chain management.

From the Author:

While meeting with industry leaders working in supply chains I found a general lack of understanding when it came to "inventory optimization".  When I started to look around for books and articles I could point them to I realized very quickly that the topic was only discussed in mathematical equations and wonky code.  Moreover, the subject was overrun by those who touted it as the solution to everything from facings on a retail shelf to placement of jet engines in the Saudi Arabia.  In effect, the inventory optimization solution was too complicated and suffering from overhype. After spending over ten years working with inventory optimization I felt it was time to provide a no-nonsense primer on the subject so those who are interested in the subject can get a good grasp without having to wade through operations research (OR) data.  The result is "Demand Driven Inventory Optimization".  Present day ERP systems are not equipped to optimize inventory.  They need to use rules based processes to get inventory levels.  This creates the dreaded bullwhip effect.  Inventory optimization is designed to compliment the ERP system.   I have written the book so that the reader can see where the shortcomings are in the ERP system, how inventory optimization works in the ERP environment, the expected results and show case studies that represent real world results...not pie in the sky promises.

From the Inside Flap:

What issues in industry verticals prompt a look at inventory optimization? What initiatives are impacting inventory optimization today? What business KPIs can be improved by using inventory optimization? This updated and revised edition of Demand-Driven Inventory Optimization and Replenishment tackles these new topics and more along the way to guiding practitioners to create a successful demand-driven supply chain.

Many of today's inventory systems don't fully leverage their supply chains and waste too much time and effort because of faulty replenishment processes. SAS expert Robert Davis knows all too well, and this eye-opening Second Edition represents the definitive look at demand-driven inventory optimization and replenishment, from a review of the most basic inventory management concepts to such advanced ones as multi-echelon inventory management. You can find this practical guide in many C-suites for its insightful guidance, helpful suggestions, and real-world case studies, exploring:

  • How to overcome in-system weaknesses and deliver results
  • The three major supply-chain efforts of the last three decades
  • An efficient path to demand-driven supply
  • Best practices for shifting from supply-driven to demand-driven methodologies
  • How systematic distribution systems work as a complete network
  • What it takes to respond to customer demand with speed and accuracy
  • The advantage to dialing back "fast" replenishment and focusing on having the right inventory
  • All the ways ERP systems get a boost from inventory optimization
  • The good, bad, and best of "proof-of-value" engagements
  • Real-world stories of inventory optimization

Demand-Driven Inventory Optimization and Replenishment, Second Edition is your single-source answer to orchestrating a supply chain to react as one process to a single demand signal.
