In the course of the evening, the most pleasant which Florence had passed in a long while, the conversation led to the events of the past few months. Kathleen dwelt mournfully upon the bitter trials they had endured, describing the scenes through which she had passed, the fears she had entertained, the sufferings, both mentally and bodily, she had encountered, in language of vivid earnestness. She portrayed the effect made upon her sensitive spirit by the coarse gibe which sometimes saluted her as she lay almost dying on the wharf, and contrasted it with the pleasure that melted her to tears, when some one, with human feelings in his heart, spoke to her kindly. He had been attacked the day following Charley O'Leary's attempt to rob him at the Shamrock tavern, and by an arrangement between Tom and the emigrant woman, had been conveyed to the place where we now find him. Every attention had been paid him by the mother and daughter, while Dr. Milton was in daily attendance.
