Sometimes the center line of the work may run along the face of a steep hill side in such a way that the side stakes for a considerable distance along the line will all come very much above, or below, the surface of the ground at the center stakes, C. In such cases it is convenient to pass from one cross section to the next without returning to the center line to begin the survey of each cross section. It may also be found desirable to carry on the survey of two, or more, cross sections at the various settings of the level. The methods are outlined below. 33.
