Maelinmun who is mentioned above as devoted to the arts, in the quotation from iEthelweid, may possibly have been the same person as the Maelinmain, wise man and anchorite, who died at Glendalough, in the year 953. The history of Ireland in this century is altogether a strange one, opening with a tale of rapine, and bloodshed, and war; but closing in the peace that ensued after the defeat of Turgesius, the Dane, by Malachy, and the accession of this monarch to the throne of Ireland. Then Clonmucnois was allowed to enjoy an interval of repose, during which her ancient edifices were restored, and many new ones erected; while throughout Ireland--"Tout rentra alors dans l'ordre naturcl; on retablit la religion; on rebatit les eglises et monasteres; on remit les loix en vigueur pour defendre l'innocent et punir le coupable; les anciens proprietaires furent mis en possession des terres et seigneurics pcrdues pendant l'usurpation." But, when used as a name, its Latin correlative is Felix, and this is the meaning of the word in a gloss in the Milan Codex: is fechtnach an andac/t, 'felix est eorum malitia.' Two stones on which this name is inscribed are still to be seen at Clonmacnois. Fechtnach was the name of a learned reader, scribe, and priest of Clonmacnois, and of the Island of Iona; but he died in Rome in the year 1024, whither he had gone on a pilgrimage. There was a Fechtnach, Abbot of Fore, in Westmeath, who died in 776 (see Four Masters), whose tombstone this may be; for it is not unlikely that an Abbot of Fore should have been buried at Clonmacnois, as a very cl...
