Synopsis
This rigorous textbook covers the construction, analysis and design of shallow and deep foundations, as well as retaining structures and slopes. It incorporates theory with practice, and emphasizes conceptual understanding. Estimation of soil parameters for use in design is given high priority. Illustrations, applications, and hands-on examples which continue across chapters are provided.
It is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and will suit specialist practicing engineers and researchers.
In this new edition:
- The basic soil mechanics is covered first, fully explaining drained versus undrained loading, phase transformation, development of peak q/p’, and critical state and residual state development with sustained shearing.
- The LRFD approach to foundations, slopes and retaining structures is overhauled in the light of new research.
- Calculations of bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations are updated to reflect more realistic methods proposed since the 1st edition.
- Recent research on piles and new design methods are incorporated, with new methods for both axially loaded piles and laterally loaded piles, so that both traditional knowledge and recent progress in the topic are available.
- The treatment of retaining structures and slopes is updated, with better discussion of limit states and the use of slope stability software and strength reduction in computational stability calculations.

About the Author
Rodrigo Salgado is a professor of civil engineering at Purdue University. He is the author of 110 journal publications, 78 conference publications, and 26 technical reports; and has a Scopus h index of 26 and over 2000 citations. He has supervised 27 Ph.D. students to completion and has been the recipient of prestigious awards, including the ICE Geotechnical Research Medal (2015), the Prakash Research Award (2005), the ASCE Huber Research Prize (2004), the ASCE Arthur Casagrande Award (1999) and the IACMAG Excellent Contributions Award (2008). He has also been an invited participant of the U.S. and U.S.-China editions of the National Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. He is a Fellow of ASCE and has been inducted into the GeoAcademy. He is an Editor of the ASCE Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering and serves on the editorial boards of several top journals. Prof. Salgado’s interests lie in foundation engineering, geomechanics, computational mechanics, constitutive modeling and offshore and energy engineering.
