Excerpt: ... belladonna. (bm-la-ddn'-na.) Deadly Nightshade. Solanacese. Acts upon the circulatory system, producing a rapid heart's action, full pulse, with dilation of the peripheral vessels. Accompanying there is delirium ending in stupor, dilation of pupils, suppressed secretions, scarlet redness of the skin, with high fever, increased or suppressed urine. Special senses painfully acute, whence the great irritability, often going so far as to end in convulsions, which are brought on or aggravated by the slightest touch. With convulsions often wild delirium, livid face, violent throbbing of carotids, injected eyes, with dilated pupils; furious delirium; desire to escape with striking or biting. Rush of blood to the head with intense stupefying headache, pulsating or jerking, worse from the least jar, and from light and noise. Headache worse lying down; sits up in bed. Bores the head in the pillow. Meningitis. Dilated pupils, staring expression or squinting with great photophobia. Violent degree of conjunctivitis, spasm of muscles of the eye. Tearing pains in the ear; great sensitiveness to noise; ringing in the ears. Parotid gland hot and swollen. Nose swollen and hot. Upper lip swollen. Nosebleed with congestion to head in children. Great heat and redness of face. Tearing pains in the face and jaws. Tetanic closure of jaws. Drawing pains in the teeth; toothache from cold worse from eating. Grinding of teeth. Tongue dry and red; soft palate bright red and swollen. Great inflammation and dryness of the throat with shooting pains on swallowing, turning the head, or touching the neck.
