While I consider what God is, how sweet His Nature, how lovely, how unspeakable, how wonderful, how greatly by all creation to be reverenced and adored, and then see and understand what man is, whom God Himself made after His own Image and Likeness, and whom further He created of such a nature, that, as he ever sets forth in himself the image of his Creator, so he should always have in his memory His Will and His Love, Who made him such, I wonder much and am amazed, both at the inestimable goodness of God the Creator, and at the great misery of man the created. At the unspeakable goodness of God I wonder, in that, while He is Himself most Almighty and most Righteous, yet He suffereth man to live even for an hour, whom for this cause He willed to make so honourable, that as man himself is more honourable than all the other works of His Hands, so he might live more honourably than all the others, always according to the Will of his Creator; and yet he, most miserable and most unhappy, doeth the very reverse; in that, while all the rest of the works of His Hands are ever in accordance with the Will of their Creator, he alone always, or almost always, resisteth His Will. And at the unspeakable misery of man I wonder, how he hath so lost all sense, liveth so like the beasts that have no sense, that he should ever forget his Creator, who cannot forget himself. I suppose, unless he be beside himself, he never forgetteth himself, so as not to understand that he is, and lives, and understands. But seeing that man understandeth that he hath all these things, it is wonderful and very amazing, how he ever forgetteth Him, Whose good pleasure it hath been to give all these things to him. I...
