It was not till much later that what were called rush lights came in, first rushes dipped in grease and then cotton dipped in tallow--though they were still called rush-lights and used as night-lights in nurseries. I can just remember in my childhood these rush-lights that were stuck into Japan pails perforated all over with round holes, and these made strange patterns on the walls and ceilings--agitating to a feverish child. The memory of Shakespeare so overshadows everything at Stratf ord-on-Avon, it is difficult to think anything else really matters.
