This man, over sixty years of age, was an old resident of the island, very rich, thoroughly acquainted with the nature of the terrible defiles and fastnesses of the mountains of Martinique. The shrewd mulatto knew this, and therefore went to him first. "Lallemont," said Vergnaud, "that negro cost me eight hundred, in gold, at the auction block, and I've made him a good cooper.
