Still the delicate eyes were bandaged lest too much exposure to air or light should excite inflammation. Dr. Greyvill was very careful of her, his darling, his betrothed. Not many weeks were to elapse now before he might claim her at the altar. How changeful is life! A little while ago he was tempest-tossed, miserable; trying to subdue the strong yearning of his nature; never daring to hope for his present happiness. Now life wore an aspect altogether different, more beautiful than any which he had imagined in his hours of fairest vision. The dew of youth was given back to him; the bow of promise spanned the sky once overcast with murky, inky clouds; the myrtle tree put forth its leaves, and the desert was as a rose. What pain could Fate bring him that that girl's hand could not soothe? What gall could she present to his lips that her tears could not sweeten? What dark hours that her smile could not brighten? How he loved to watch the sweet eyes, "wondering in their light," the bewilderment that each strange object called in them, the rapture that the beautiful impressed on them, apd the contrary emotions which were wakened, sometimes unavoidably; pity, dislike, but never scorn. And Helen was to live with her. She must not be separated from the friend who had been her stay in adversity, and Helen was still necessary to her. Helen had found a friend in Dr. Greyvill; one who would reward her faithful, self-denying service, and never let her want.
