An attempt has been made in the foregoing pages to appeal on behalf of the larger hope to theological principles and standards of doctrine to which the respect of all Catholics is due. I have purposelyabstained from any examination of the teaching and condemnation of Origen, and the history of the Fifth General Council. By the kindness of my friend, the Rev. H. H. Jeaffreson, this important and difficult matter is discussed, with a learning and ability beyond my power to command, in the following letter a letter which is, I know, the outcome of much careful research and study, and, I venture to think, a contribution of permanent value to this momentous controversy, with which at present so many minds are occupied. To engage in it involves no small responsibility, and in undertaking it I cannot be sufficiently thankful for the encouraging sympathy and ready cooperation of so competent a scholar and so earnest a thinker. 'my Dear Gurney,--I heard with very great pleasure that you had been led to express in print some of those reasons which have moved you, as a Catholic priest, to espouse the hope that the final victory of our Redeemer over sin will be complete. The pleasure was increased when you kindly proposed that I should add to your essay a few words on the historical question, whether such a hope is in any way contradictory to any conciliar decision of the Catholic Church, or to the general testimony of her tradition as it is to be found in the Fathers.
