Among the brave and valiant Knights who came over from Normandy, with William the Conqueror, and who are recorded in the roll of Ballade Abbey, foremost on the list appears the name of Adomar de Pomeroy. The De Pomeroys were one of the most illustrious faimlies in Normandy, and held large possessions in that Duchy, in the time of Eollo; but after his death, such feuds and contentions sprung up among the barons, and such scenes of rapine and pillage ensued, that they, in time, lost all their vast possessions; so that their youthful descendant, found himself without other means of support than Duke William's bounty, and his own good sword.--Duke William loved the noble Adomar; he oft had marked the daring spirit, and high bearing of the youth, (a spirit so accordant with his own) and heard with unfeigned delight, his determination of following him to England, there to seek a better fortune. "Follow me then noble De Pomeroy," cried the Duke, "and should success crown our arms, the fairest lands in England be thy portion." The eve of departure came, when Adomar de Pomeroy (having received the Duke's last order, with regard to their embarkation the following morning,) retired to his chamber, and throwing himself on a couch, endeavoured to seek that repose which he knew would be so needful,--but he slept not,--thought after thought crowded into his mind, visions of the past and future floated before him, and contended for the mastery. Now would he reflect on the daring adventure he was engaged in, and of the fair country he would abandon, most probably for ever. True,--he had no ties, no connections, to detain him in Normandy; he was the sole surviving representative of his ancient family.--Other ties he had none,--he was...
